Children Among Victims in Russian Strikes, Hours After Trump Putin Talks Shelved

October 22, 2025 | Kyiv

A wave of missile and drone strikes launched by Russian forces overnight has killed at least six civilians in Ukraine, including two children, and caused widespread damage to energy infrastructure and residential buildings, Ukrainian officials said.

The bombardment struck the capital Kyiv and surrounding regions in the early hours of Wednesday, with blasts echoing across the city and emergency services responding to fires and high-rise building damage. Kyiv’s military administration head reported debris from downed weapons and multiple fires in several districts.

Among the dead were two children, a six-month-old baby and a 12-year-old girl, who died when their home in a village north of the capital caught fire after a drone strike. Another civilian died in a separate strike in the Kyiv region.

The strikes came only hours after the U.S. White House said a planned summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had been put on hold following Moscow’s rejection of an immediate ceasefire.

Ukraine’s presidential chief of staff criticized the escalation, saying it demonstrated that collective actions against Putin are currently insufficient and called for stronger international pressure on Russia.

Russia said it was continuing its campaign of bombardments and claimed attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure were legitimate military operations. Kyiv’s energy minister reported power outages across most regions of Ukraine following the strikes.
