Gaza Ceasefire Collapses as Israel Kills Hamas Military Chief and Aid Crisis Reaches Breaking Point

The fragile ceasefire framework negotiated between Israel and Hamas has effectively collapsed, with Israel announcing this week that it killed Mohammed Deif, the head of Hamas’s military wing and one of the principal architects of the October 7, 2023 attacks that triggered the current Gaza war. The announcement follows weeks of mounting humanitarian catastrophe inside Gaza, where community kitchens serving basic staples like lentils once a week have become the only remaining food source for hundreds of thousands of civilians as international aid flows have plunged by 37 percent.

Israel’s military confirmed the killing in a statement that described Deif as one of the most dangerous terrorists in the organization’s history and said his elimination significantly degrades Hamas’s operational command capacity. Palestinian authorities and Hamas did not immediately confirm the death. The strike that killed Deif also reportedly killed or wounded dozens of civilians in the surrounding area, according to Palestinian health officials, triggering immediate international condemnation from European governments and UN agencies.

The UN children’s agency UNICEF reported this week that Israeli attacks have killed or wounded 59 children in a single week despite the nominal existence of a ceasefire arrangement. James Elder, UNICEF’s spokesperson, said March 2026 saw the highest number of Palestinians injured by settler attacks in 20 years, and that attacks on children are becoming “increasingly coordinated,” with documented cases including children who were shot, stabbed, beaten, and pepper-sprayed. The agency described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as approaching a point of total systemic failure.

Community kitchens operating inside Gaza told Euronews’s correspondents on the ground that only 10 percent of their required funding for 2026 has been secured, while the number of people depending on their services has reached hundreds of thousands. The collapse in aid funding reflects donor fatigue, political disputes over the legitimacy of different aid organizations, and the physical difficulty of moving supplies into Gaza under Israeli restrictions. The World Food Programme has warned that famine conditions now exist in parts of northern Gaza, with children showing clinical signs of acute malnutrition.

Israeli nationalists held their annual Jerusalem Day flag march through the Old City this week, with participants chanting slogans hostile to Arab residents. Israeli peace activists gathered separately near the march route to demonstrate support for Palestinian residents. The Jerusalem Day event, which commemorates Israel’s capture of East Jerusalem in the 1967 war, routinely produces confrontations and is guarded by thousands of security forces. This year’s march took place against the backdrop of the Gaza war and heightened settler violence in the West Bank, making it one of the most politically charged in the event’s history.

The US brokered the brief ceasefire that allowed Russia to hold its Victory Day parade in Moscow, demonstrating American diplomatic capacity to produce short-term military pauses. But Washington has been unable or unwilling to impose a similar pause in Gaza, reflecting the deep political constraints on US policy in the conflict. Trump expressed general support for Israel’s military objectives throughout the Beijing summit, even as Xi Jinping pushed for a broader ceasefire and called for an independent Palestinian state.

International legal pressure on Israel continues to intensify. Proceedings at the International Court of Justice in The Hague continue, with multiple countries seeking advisory opinions on the legality of Israel’s ongoing military operations. South Africa and other states are pursuing genocide accusations through the court’s formal mechanism, a process that could take years to resolve but that carries significant reputational and diplomatic consequences for Israel and its allies.

Palestinians worldwide marked the 78th anniversary of the Nakba this month, commemorating the displacement of more than 750,000 people during Israel’s founding in 1948. For Palestinians in Gaza living through what they describe as a continuation of that original catastrophe, the anniversary carried particular weight. The convergence of the Nakba anniversary, the collapse of ceasefire talks, the killing of Hamas’s military chief, and the acute humanitarian crisis has produced one of the most dangerous moments in the conflict since it began.
