Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps fired on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. It also announced the waterway was closed to traffic again. The move marks a sharp escalation that could undermine the fragile US–Iran ceasefire and disrupt global energy markets.

The British military confirmed a second vessel was struck in the strait within hours. This has raised fears of a return to open hostilities.

The IRGC statement said that restrictions on designated commercial shipping lanes would remain in place until guarantees are provided for the complete lifting of the US naval blockade on Iran.

The escalation followed Iran’s seizure of two vessels it accused of violating maritime regulations and endangering security in the Strait of Hormuz, an action Tehran described as lawful enforcement measures..

The ceasefire, extended by President Trump Tuesday night, appears increasingly nominal. Trump has maintained the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports as a condition for negotiations, while Iran insists the blockade must be lifted before it will attend a new round of talks.

Iran’s UN envoy said that talks could resume in Islamabad once Washington lifts the blockade.

However, senior advisers to Iran’s parliamentary leadership have described the continued extension of the blockade as meaningless and unproductive..

Lebanon’s conflict continues to compound the regional crisis. Beirut’s disaster management authorities raised the death toll from Israeli attacks over the past weeks to 2,454, with 7,658 injured. Hezbollah fired rockets into southern Israel in what Israel’s military called a violation of their separate ceasefire, responding with strikes on Hezbollah rocket launchers.

China, which has been closely watching the crisis from Beijing, issued a formal warning on Wednesday that the situation has reached a critical juncture. It called on all parties to make maximum efforts to prevent a return to full hostilities.

On Chinese social media, some users have framed the ongoing conflict as a strategic opportunity for Beijing. AI-generated content mocking US military involvement has also circulated widely on Weibo.

Markets reacted immediately to the news, with Brent crude rising sharply and airline stocks falling on fears of further jet fuel disruptions. The window for a diplomatic breakthrough is narrowing fast.
